Life Enrichment Through Success With Horses

Franklin Levinson, an internationally known Horse Whisperer, completed a three-week visit to the UK in September. He visited England for the first time last May and began this new tour with a day dedicated to children in Warwickshire.

The morning began with a programme entitled Successful Communicating with your Horse or Pony. Children, who own their own ponies, were given individual attention with their horse whilst he explained to them his horse training methods, helping them overcome any difficulties they were experiencing with their horses and strengthening their horse/human relationship based on a language of trust and respect.

The afternoon programme demonstrated Equine Facilitated Learning to healthcare professionals who work with adults and children in the Midlands. EFL, a well-established form of therapy in the States, aids with emotional and mental well-being. Four children who had been diagnosed with such conditions as ADHD, attended with a parent and/or therapist. Soon all children were able to lead horses confidently around the arena, and, amazingly, in certain cases lunge them over cavalletti's. Parents were astounded by their child's capabilities and potential. The children found a deep connection to horses, which facilitated each child taking a developmental leap. The warmth of the reception from the audience of mostly health care professionals (including members of the RDA), was palpable.

The following week Franklin began an Equine Facilitated Learning Introductory Training Course in the same area. His intention was that this will be the first of many programmes for those who wish to combine success with horses with therapeutic training working with children, thus opening doors in the UK for people who wish to take this up as a career. But most importantly, for those children and adults who benefit from this connection and contact with horses by having their lives enriched and enhanced.

Franklin also held two "Way of The Horse/Training Thru Trust" Seminars, one at New Zealand Farm, Warwickshire and one at The Unicorn Trust Equestrian Centre. These informative and experiential Seminars (which were mostly sold out) were held over several days. Participants were able to spend individual and group time with Franklin learning "the steps of the dance". Franklin communicates from his heart with both horses and people, and many found they had life changing experiences during the Seminars. In Oxfordshire, Franklin did a horse training demonstration to over 100 people following the Natural Horse Gathering at Brackenhill Stud, and where once again he demonstrated EFL, working with children with Downs Syndrome and Autism, touching the children, parents and spectators alike.

Even spectators become closely involved and moved by Franklin's Way of The Horse Seminars. The many letters of thanks we have received clearly demonstrate how many horses and people Franklin was able to help and inspire. Additionally, he would like to thank everyone who took part and he looks forward to greeting old friends and making new ones on his next visit.

This article describes what goes on at The New Horse facility in Dorset and my programs there. I have taught there before and loved it enough to have it become my UK base. The Bourchier family who own and operate this first rate facility are some of the best folks anywhere. The horsemanship is superior, the place is terrific and the people the best.
