sleeping behavior

I feel I should know this but dont – is it normal and or common for a horse to sleep lying down rather than standing up?

Horses sleep both standing up and lying down. It depends on their environment which they do more of. Warm days may see them lying down in the sun. Cooler days may see them standing and sleeping. You may notice not all the horses in a herd (group) sleep at the same time. Some stand as sentinals, ready to warn and wake the others in the herd if danger approaches. Later on, the ones that were sleeping stand watch and the others get their chance to have a snooze.

Sincerely, Franklin
