1Head tossing...not accepting bit
I was given two older Arab mares. The woman told me that they were both broke to ride, but when I went to bridle the younger one she fought me and once I got her bridled tossed her head quite a bit. The bit they told me to use was a pretty severe ...

2Training a 6-year-old mare to walk faster & head shaking problems
...her walk is SO slow. Snails have passed her (okay, I'm exaggerating a little). Even in the pasture, she walks slowly; the trot appears to be her favorite gait. How can I encourage her to walk faster without breaking into a trot? I don't want to confuse her as I keep encouraging her to go faster and then telling her to slow down when she breaks into a trot....

3The proper and best bit
...is this normal for a riding instructor to change the bit on me because I have been reading the twisted snaffles exerts more pressure on the tongue than the curve bit that I was using. I enjoyed the lessons but was frustrated that all of sudden my horse was throwing her head and was not relaxed enough to accept my lead and was everywhere.....

4Love my horse, afraid to ride him
...I found your website searching for help for fearful riders. I have not been on a horse in well over a year. ... One day my stirrup leather broke during a canter with a strong-willed horse (the type that grabs the bit and runs). I lost my balance and I landed on my head.....

6Mare balking and spinning
.She is very quiet and sweet on the ground, but once I get into the saddle the tables turn. She charges for the gate at great speed and will not HO at all. On top of that once I dismount and walk thru the gate and remount she will walk along OK for a while then decide she has had enough of this and refuse to go forward and dips and spins shakes her head and has a temper tantrum. Every ride has turned into a battle....

7Shy little Arab
This fall I purchased my 1st horse, a beautiful little arab gelding. Czar has had an interesting history. He was originally owned by a gentleman who rode him in endurance trail races. From what I am told they were very closely bonded, but the man died and Czar was placed in the hands of a broker, then sold to a family who didn't really know much about horses. He spent two years living out in a pasture without any shelter and with little human contact....

..I've started keeping my horse's head turned toward me while trying to pickup her feet and have had some progress, she'll lift the foot but won't hold it without pulling away. ...she saddles fine and you can mount with no problem but she doesn't know how to walk in a straight line or even in a small circle....

10Setting boundries with horses/crowding issues
..My only issue with him is his tendency to crowd. One minute he is leading as pretty as you please, the next he almost runs me over. My impression is that he got away with this in the past, and now when he wants to be done, he tries it out again. ...

11Head Tossing Behavior on left lead only
..I have a 4 year old filly that has developed a nasty habit of head tossing on the left lead canter departure. She picks up the lead easily and beautifully and then raises her nose to the point where there is no rein control at all. When I ride it through she will eventually bring her head down but does not seem relaxed at all. There is absolutely no problem going the other way. ...

12Rehab for Ex-racehorses
... I have a registered 7yr thoroughbred that did race. He is very soft in the mouth but minimal leg knowledge. ...He does want to please and learn but he sometimes has a sideways head tossing when trotting and then sometimes has this jerk head down thing. Is he telling me something? Is there anywhere to go to find out how he was trained or why he was released from he track? Or even how he was trained?.....

13Head tossing & racing Appy gelding
...I recently switched from the evils of a Tom Thumb bit to a sweet iron low-port curb bit. This eliminated some of the head tossing because it elminated pinching action,...[Also] If he's out on his own or ahead of the other horses, he's not a problem to rein in. If there's a horse in front of him, we have issues.

14...my horse seems to pull little tricks on me when my instructor is not there
...I have a good instructor who also trains my horse and seems to really "get" horse psychology, her methods are gentle and fair and great consideration is always shown the horse. My problem is that my horse seems to pull little tricks on me when my instructor is not there and it's just the two of us (when I am trying to do my "homework" with her between lessons). The latest one was bucking, preceded by wild head tossing, just as I was putting her into the trot (this in the round pen). She was sweet and calm before that....

15Mares vs. gendings & curb strap head tossing
...I understand geldings are usually a little easier and mares can be a problem when trail riding if they are in season. I would like your opinion on mare or gelding for first horse to train from the start. Also for riding with other horses, mare or gelding?...

17Strange behavior in my young mare
