Right horses for austistic children

Hi Franklin,

I have 2 autistic grandsons – one severe. I very much like your way of working with them and the horses. I am looking for a horse now to have for the boys. Do I need to look for any special qualities in this horse other than for her fairly quiet?
Diane

Hi Diane,

In my experience, like humans, each horse is different with different apptitudes, inclincations, likes and dislikes. Some horses will quickly bond with and sort of 'caretake' and austistic child and others will stay away. So, it is more than a calm, people friendly horse.

My suggestion would be to take the child to meet a few different horses and see which provide the most obvious connection. Let the horse and child make the decision as much as possible. They will know best actually.

Sincerely, Franklin
