Rearing Up Problem
Franklin,
I have a 6-yr old Saddlebred that rears up when I work with him on the ground. Something might frighten him but other times there is no reason for it. I am working with my trainer walking him on the lead and then turning him out but when I'm alone with him he still rears up. He also has been giving my trainer the same trouble although not as frequently. He also rears up if there is a horse running in the arena or bullpen at the barn. He is also frightened if a horse runs past him or comes toward him.
Any advice?

Sorry it has taken so long to respond to you. I have been traveling a lot (Greece & England) and did not have my laptop with me. Perhaps I can offer some suggestions now.
Do you know what I mean by 'bending your horse'? On the ground it means doing very tight circles in both directions having the horse yield his hind end. In the saddle It means bending your horse tightly around an 'inside' leg, both directions. Both of these moves should be done the horse is even thinking of rearing. They should be done effectively, efficently, with no big fuss by horse or human. These skills must be practiced by horse and handler/rider. This activity will take the horse's mind off of whatever else is on it and put it on you as the 'great leader'. Practice them so you can do them anytime with your horse or any horse.
