Picking up the right lead

Hi Franklin,

I really hope you can help me with my new 4 year old paint. I bought him about 4 months ago now, and I have tried everything I know to do, to get him to pick up his right lead. He always picks up his left, but I am training him to be a show horse so I need him to get that right lead on cue. I recently trained another horse who was bad on his left lead to pick it up on cue, but none of the things I've tried work for my new paint. During these 4 months he hasn't picked up the right lead ONCE. Usually a horse with lead problems picks up his "off-lead" every now and then even if by mistake, but he doesn't. Please help me out!

Thank you for your time,

Kristen

Hi Kristen,

You know I have a horse that is reluctant to picking up his left lead except when lunging. I have determined he is just so habituated to picking up the right lead that it is behavioral and a lot of time needs to be taken to get him to move off on the left. Do you have a round pen and does your horse pick up the right lead when lunging? If he moves to the right 'normally' when lunging or in the round pen, it is a habitual problem and not a physical one. If he cannot pick up the lead at any time, it is a physical issue and you should consult your veterinarian and your ferrier. You could lunge the horse to the right with a rider on him. This may help him pick it up. Let me know how it goes and if he will take it when lunging. Keep me posted please.

Sincerely, Franklin

Franklin,

Thank you so much for the advice. It is working!

I can't believe I never thought of that! I am so glad that it is not a phisical problem. He is an extremly smart horse and learns very quickly, so I have him picking it up on the lunge line pretty consistently now.

Again thank you very much!! Kristen

Hi Kristen,
