Career in horses

Dear Franklin,

I am looking to start a career. I have found through trial and error that I am a jack of all trades but a master of none. I would like to find a career that allows me to do what I love and still be able to provide for myself and a future family. I have found that the only thing I enjoy doing is being around horses, horse people, and the outdoors. Unfortunately my training and resources to obtain training and education is limited so whatever I decide to do I have to be sure of and must stick with it. Any information you can provide to me on how to make working with horses a successful career would be appreciated. I would like to point out that I do not want to get rich doing this, I only want a career that in 30 years I can wake up in the morning say "I can't wait to go to work" instead of wakening up and saying "I have to go to work." I hope you can kind of understand what I'm asking, and again any information you can provide will be appreciated.
Thank you, Cody

Hi Cody,

I get a lot of questions involving this same question. I can only suggest finding horse facilities and either volunteering your services in exchange for learning or taking a straight out job. Entry level jobs with horses are usually the grunt work. This is to be expected. Get creative where you look. Try equestrian camps and schools, working ranches frequently hire on new hands. If you can get your foot in the door and work very hard and work very 'smart' over a number of years, you may get something going. It is not easy. But if you love horses, you may just get to look forward to going to work on a daily basis rather than wishing you were doing something else. I have worked extremely hard in my life with horses. For the most part I have loved it all. Dealing with the humans along the way has been the most challenging part of it.

Good Luck to you and many Blessings always.....

Sincerely, Franklin
